Around the late 1970s, several small roots music festivals started around Michigan. Among those festivals was the Spirit of the Woods Folk Festival in Brethren, which first took place in 1978.
Fast forward nearly 40 years, a most of those late 70s festivals have grown up into huge, multi-day affairs. While the peers of the Spirit of the Woods Folk Festival, like Wheatland Music Festival in Remus and Blissfest in Harbor Springs, have become multi-day events with pricey tickets, Spirit of the Woods remains a free, one-day event, making it a unique and accessible festival.
This year’s festival was well-attended, likely in large part because the weather was so gorgeous!
The artist lineup included:
- Damaru from Chennai, India
- Rollie Tussing & Midwest Territory Band
- Benzie Playboyz
- Olivia Mainville & the Aquatic Troupe
- The Rough & Tumble
- Awesome Distraction
- Dede & the Dreamers
The Spirit of the Woods Folk Festival is one of our favorite area events every summer, as it always draws a great musical lineup and a fun, diverse crowd. In addition to two stages of music throughout the day, there are also a variety of vendors, a concession stand with lots of delicious choices (including vegetarian and vegan options), and activities for kids.
If you missed this year’s festival, there is always next year to look forward to! It takes place every year on the 3rd Saturday in June at the Dickson Township Park in Brethren, Michigan. Like the Spirit of the Woods Music Association Facebook page to keep up with news about the festival, as well as other events throughout the year!
Also, don’t forget that both the ShoreLine ShowCase concert series and the Roots on the River concert series will be starting soon for the year, and Douglas Valley Winery hosts weekly Music on the Porch all season long. There are plenty of great opportunities in store for fabulous, free music in Manistee this summer!
